Miss Patty Cake!!

Next to Disney World and learning she'd be a big sister, Kendall got the biggest surprise she's had in a while...

... tickets to see Miss Patty Cake LIVE and IN PERSON!

You may be wondering WHO is Miss Patty Cake?  Well, she's a singer and songwriter with a message to children that Jesus loves them!  We have many of her videos, and Kendall has been a big fan for years.

Click here to find out more about Miss Patty Cake.

Here's a picture of Miss Patty Cake..

And here's the picture Kendall drew of Miss Patty Cake to give to her.

After her concert, Kendall and Brielle got a chance to meet and talk with Miss Patty Cake.  Kendall was SO excited, yet calm under pressure.  And she was THRILLED to meet her as evidenced in the following pictures...

Miss Patty Cake signed their new DVD cover and signed another paper for Kendall to keep.  Kendall was SO excited the remainder of the day.  Brielle thought it was pretty cool, too!

Brielle Conversations {vol. 1}

When Mommy gets her camera out,

Brielle running up with a silly grin: Mommy, cheese me!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last week Daddy stayed home from work with Brielle since she was a little under the weather.  When she woke up they walked into the kitchen...

Daddy:  Which cereal do you want for breakfast?

Brielle:  Cookies!

Daddy:  We don't eat cookies for breakfast.

Brielle: No, ME eat cookies.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mommy: Brielle, why did you spit that tomato out on Mommy's new rug??

Brielle, very sarcastically: Sorry!!

First Day of Kindergarten!!

We all work up early. Got dressed. Somehow downed a little breakfast. And we even made it out the door early enough for the all important first day of school pictures.

Since my complete breakdown had occurred earlier in the week, I was able to be the glue holding this operation all together.  I just focused on the motions.  Dress. Eat. Comb hair. Nothing any deeper beyond that for fear of a secondary mini-breakdown.  (I cried a little with Kendall the night before and totally lied and answered I was just so happy for her when she asked.) We were all a little nervous but none of us dared show it for anyone else's sake.  Except Brielle.  She just couldn't get past the wonder of why she was plucked out the bed so stinkin' early.

Recently I had purchased matching bracelets for Kendall and me to both wear on her first day.  They were made up of each of our two favorite colors, purple and pink & orange and blue.  She would know every time she looks at it that Mama is praying for her and my heart was with her.

It's really getting real now.  We made it to the parking lot.  One more picture with our bracelets.

Then...the walk.  That walk seemed so short and long at the same time.  I felt pretty good with how I seemed to really be staying calm and put together .  I wouldn't let me mind go any further than concentrating on the sidewalk and holding Brielle's hand so she wouldn't wonder off in the constant of mamas, daddies and kindergartners on the same mission.  Then I noticed the mamas and daddies walking against the flow.  Without holding little hands.  Headed back to the parking lot. We all seemed to feel the silent comradery.   No one wanted to make eye contact for fear of a breakdown.  (One mama was walking with her head down and on her phone while wiping her eyes.  I knew she was talking to her OWN mama.  Note to self...not the best time to call your mom.  You'll break down for sure.) I was about to suffer the same fate as these parents in a few short minutes. And we ALL knew it. Oh dear. We're all in this together I told myself.  I'm one of many mamas with these feelings today.  I WILL survive this walk, drop off, and day.  Then I reminded myself it wasn't about surviving the day, because tomorrow was gonna come along with next week, next year, and on.  It was about embracing the change and accepting it despite the tenderness to the pain.  It was about celebrating my child and her accomplishments.  It was about cheering her own as she continues to grow in "wisdom, stature and favor with God and man".  It was about enjoying the season of life God has led us to and thanking Him for His faithfulness in the past AND the future.

We're approaching the school now.  Whew, one mini breakdown avoided.  Good thing we had such a positive experience at open house the day before.  Her teacher seemed PERFECT for her.  She was all I had prayed for when praying for Kendall's specific needs.  But I knew if I focused too much on God's goodness in the moment I would break down again so I turned my attention to the colored tile strip along the hall, reminding Kendall out loud to remember she's on the "green hall" so as to help her keep her bearings. You've done this yesterday, it's the same thing I reminded myself.

Then I met a co-worker in the halls who shares her duties with our church preschool and the public elementary school.  She stopped to enthusiastically greet Kendall and me.  As we walked off to turn into Kendall's class, she stopped us again.  "You are in Mrs. L's class?!?! OH MY WORD.  You are going to love her!! She is precious and such a good friend of mine!!" Then she got dangerously close into my face, "Kendall is  SO BLESSED to have Mrs. L as her teacher.  SO BLESSED!"  At the same time God was speaking to me, "See, that's my confirmation.  I've heard all your prayers. Kendall is going to be FINE." And THAT is the moment my mini breakdown happened.

Good thing I composed myself as we entered the crowded room of nervous kiddos and reluctant parents.  I tried to turn my auto pilot back on so Kendall wouldn't suspect anything.  We found her cubby and got her bags situated...

We smiled for a photo opp...

We took one last picture...

Then in one breath I kissed Kendall, told her I loved her and that I'd be waiting in carpool, and swooped Brielle up before she had opportunity to reorganize the classroom and whisked us all out of there (Gabe I think gave one extra glance back but I didn't have the courage).  I didn't turn around once.  And I made it a point to smile to the nervous parents I passed on the way back to the car, fake as it may have seemed.  And I didn't call my mom. And I didn't make too much eye contact with Gabe when we said our goodbyes as he headed to work. But I DID stare at the clock for the remainder of the school day more times than I ever knew possible. And I was waiting in carpool with a big smile on my face.

One down, one hundred seventy nine to go.  Times twelve.  That's all??!

Ready or Not!

Ready or not it's here.  That dreaded day that five and three fourths years ago seemed so far away and really was a non-thought to a bleary eyed new mommy.  That day that somehow "snooked" (Kendall's word) up on all of us.  That day that puts a gut wrenching knot in the pit of every mama's stomach.  That day that you know is the beginning of a new chapter in your child's life.  That day that wakes you up to realize it's a new chapter in MAMA'S life as well. That day that brings such an odd stirring of excitement and accomplishment along with anxiety and worry in the heart of every mama.

The First Day of Kindergarten

The day that my heart will be entering into a school building to begin a long journey of education and self discovery...without me. The day my child will grow her wings a little more.  The day my child realizes she's ready and mama just needs to get on board. The day mama does a reality check on what exactly her goals in parenting her child is and is not.  If I'm supposed to be loving and nurturing my child all while preparing and equipping her for her own future independence then this is the most logical first step, right? RIGHT.

The First Day of Kindergarten

But, oh the first step is the hardest!  The first tears are the most bittersweet.  And the first smiles are the most healing and rewarding.

So here begins Kendall's first steps...

Those first steps out of the house.  Those first steps into the parking lot and toward the school door.

I mean, I have prepared her and me as much as possible, right? The August checklist has been completed...

...new crisp school clothes...check
... new feaux lacing tennis shoes (cuz we're still working on that)...check
... new monogrammed and matching book bag and lunch box...check
... inspiring lunch box ideas pinned on my Pinterest board...check
... registration complete...check...way back in March because you can't be late!
... school supplies purchased, labeled and organized...check
... handbook read...check
... carpool map studied...check
... school website scoured for any bit of worthy information a new parent should know...check
... exact dismissal time confirmed...check...check...and check
... school district app downloaded...check
... first PTO meeting attended...check
... school t-shirt washed and ready for spirit Fridays...check

So I think we have the first weeks covered.  But have I really prepared my child and me for the journey??

All summer long I've given longer hugs of comfort, extra words of confirmation and sometimes too much unsolicited advice.  After all my first born is just like me and I knew her list of worries might be different from mine but quite possibly just as lengthy.  And it showed in her numerous questions ranging from where is the bathroom and what will my desk look like, to will any friends be in her class (and some non-friends NOT being in her class) and will she be able to do the work her teacher requires of her. And since she is just like me I knew the unspoken concerns also.  With every reassurance and vote of confidence I gave her, I was giving myself an internal pep talk as well.

And I've just about worn out my knees praying for her. Specific prayers have been...
... to equip her with every spiritual blessing God has imputed into His children
... fill her with joy for learning and her specific classroom
... love for her classmates
... understanding of the material taught
... peace when she misses her mama
...  a heart of obedience to her teacher
... wisdom to make right choices
... discernment to pick friends wisely
... diligence to do her work well
... patience with others
... boldness to speak for truth

We've been reading scripture together this summer that I hoped would help her in her first weeks of adjustment.  And I have prayed just about as much for her teacher as I have for Kendall.  My prayer has been that God would place Kendall in the exact class with the best teacher for her.  Kendall's complicated "medical situations" have been a constant battle of worry and anxiety for me.  I know it's not due to Kendall's behavior, and I know she needed a teacher that would be compassionate, understanding and trusting to help foster a sense of ease in Kendall as worry on her part would probably make it all worse. Those qualities were more important to me than a teacher with a string of degrees behind her name, or accolades and popularity with the reputation of "THE teacher" every mamas hopes to get lucky enough to get.  And on the summer days when my emotions would get the best of me, I chose to trust God's sovereignty and faithfulness.

Now to wait to see all these prayers come to fruition...

I've equipped my child in every way I know possible. Let's get the show on the road.  The suspense is killing us both!

Kindergarten, here WE come!

'Lil Cookie Monster

"My Cookie Paw-ty!" Brielle told everyone!  She was so proud of her Cookie Monster party brought to you by the letter B and the number 2.

Brielle waited for her friends to arrive for the first round of celebration. She had three friends come play, Ella, Caleb and Grayson.

Then the following weekend we celebrated with family.

JuJu made it in a picture!!

JuJu, Brielle and "bi-kul" as Brielle calls Michael.

Since Grayson really counts as friend AND family, he came again for round two!

And when it's your birthday, and you're two, and barely had a nap, and KNOW it's your birthday, and just celebrated with a second party, your mama will give in and let you eat cookies in the bath.  Cuz Mama was too slap wore out to die on that hill.

JuJu's Visit

The suspense of JuJu's arrival was almost unbearable. Brielle kept saying, "JuJu red car!"

And of course there's not one picture with JuJu in it so you'll just have to take my word she came.  She's always the family photographer.  We went to the local splash park.

BY FAR the closest Kendall has EVER gotten to the big bucket!! I'm so proud of her!
