The big day is quickly approaching. The day I've dreaded for a long time. The day that when she was born almost six short years ago that seemed so far away but has come before I realized it.
Big School.
A few weeks ago I ran into a parent of a former kindergartner I taught before I became a mother. (Her daughter will be entering high school in the fall!) I had to apologize to her for something she knew nothing about over the years. Since I hadn't experienced motherhood yet when her child was in my class I didn't fully "get it". I wasn't sure exactly what "it" was at the time as I was told I'd understand one day. What I "didn't get" was why these mamas were making such a fuss over their child being in kindergarten. I mean, really, for crying out loud, they're ONLY five! They're still little! It's not like they're going off to college, which why even worry about since that's still SO far away when you're a mere kindergartner. They can barely read! So c.a.l.m. d.o.w.n. mamas.
Ha! It's amazing how perspective can change things. It's amazing how two small children can come into your life and completely turn your life inside out. Literally. Because becoming a mother involves having your heart walk around outside your body. And every step, every closing chapter in a child's life and motherhood's journey is bittersweet for a mama.
Kendall has many times been referred to as my Sidekick. She's my buddy. She goes with me just about everywhere. It's a rare moment to have time to myself, and that's ok. Tiring, but ok. (Realization #1: Kids grow up WAY too fast.) And up to now, there's very little in Kendall's daily life that I don't know about. Even though she went to a half day K3 and K4 program, she was home by lunch, and I am involved in the program so these teachers and directors are my friends and co-workers. So I was in the know. But now? Oh dear lord, my child will be one little fish in an awfully big pond. I think that 's the hardest part for me. I'm going to miss her! (Realization #2: The days are long but the years are short.) She won't eat lunch with Brielle and me. And the majority of what I know of her day will come solely from what she tells me about unfamiliar teachers and classmates.
(Realization #3: Kids are sponges.) They soak up way more than we give them credit for. They so badly want to be big that they study and imitate the adults around them. I'm praying this summer that God would place Kendall in the class that would be the best fit for her, a teacher that will be a godly role model for her and her classmates. And I'm praying again for this coming year for a sweet friend in her class. A friend who also would be a good influence on her and would have the same morals instilled into her that we are striving to instill in our daughters. God answered that prayer this past year and I'm hopeful He will again.
I know next summer I'll look back on her kindergarten year and be so grateful for God's faithfulness. I'll be happy as a mama to watch her grow. learn and begin to mature into the young lady God created her to be. But given Realization #4 (Anticipation is worse than the event) I'm gonna sweat it out a little this summer.
Bear with this mama. I have moments when I'm excited and happy, and moments when I'm dreadful and anxious. In other words, I'm basically a roller coaster. I hope I get the hang of easing out the nest now. I heard it's worse with the baby! Until then, I'll just squeeze Brielle a little tighter.

End of Year Program
The day I had dreaded all school year arrived! And I made it through barely (in part due to keeping Brielle halfway still and quiet in my lap).
But nonetheless I made it with minimal tears (they all came the two weeks leading up). It would have been kind of Mrs. Rita to have picked a year to retire when I did NOT have a child "graduating". But apparently she didn't consult me on the matter.
Kendall was so proud of her certificate. She also received a Bible with her name in it.
This was the best family picture we were able to get. Never mind the blue thingie coming out of Gabe's head!
I had specifically prayed that God would bless Kendall with a truly special friend this year. A friend that would love Jesus and be a godly influence on her. God answered that prayer twice over.
Kendall and bff #1 Keely...
...and bff #2 Hannah.
Keely will be attending a different public school next year but her mom (who is an MMO teacher and has become a friend to me as well) and I have made a promise to keep them in touch with each other. Hannah attends our church and will also be going to the same school as Kendall next year.
Kendall is on the top row. You can spot her big pink bow easily.
Kendall and me with Keely and Monica.
Such a sweet night to celebrate an awesome school year.

Toothless Grins!
The Tooth Fairy had a busy night at the Goza's recently!
At the end of a school day in mid April Kendall ran into my office and this is what I was greeted with! When I exclaimed she had a tooth missing (the lesser loose of the two) she argued with me!! It took a look in the mirror for her to realize her mama was RIGHT! All we can think is that while eating her carrot sticks her tooth popped out without her even realizing it.
While I cooked dinner, Kendall worked (and worked, and cried, and sobbed, and worked some more and cringed) on the original loose tooth that couldn't even stand up in her mouth anymore. FINALLY she mustered the courage to let Mommy reach in and gently lift the now detached tooth off her gum.
So suddenly the Tooth Fairy had double duty!!
Kendall wrote her note...
Left a tiny snack of star sprinkles, Snow Caps and a sip of Sprite,
placed the one tooth we had in a pillow, and went to sleep.
In the morning The Tooth Fairy left her $4 and a tiny, tiny, note that must have been written in 5 point font congratulating her on her exciting news!
She's growing up way too fast for these parents!!

4.5
So I noticed the other day that I never posted about Kendall at her fourth birthday. You know, all her quirks, milestones, favorites, etc. To make it look like I planned it that way, I will proceed to capture Kendall at 4.5 years.
Kendall...
...loves to play school. I know everything that happens during her actual school day because she comes home and reenacts it all, as the teacher of course. It's amazing how she can multitask already.
...her teacher has already informed me that Kendall could run the class in her absence.
...is a leader of her peers. Though she can be BOSSY at home, she leads her friends in such a kind, take charge manner that they listen to her and want to play with her.
...writes her name, though the K still gives her a little trouble.
...is becoming a healthy eater. She now loves broccoli (she always asks for seconds), salad, and most vegetables and pretty much all fruits.
...is a great big sister. Poor Brielle will have two mommies telling her what to do.
...is OCD like her mother. Everything must be in its place. And she can already be trusted to pick out bows, shoes or any accessory that appropriately matches a given outfit.
...has two favorite colors: pink and purple.
...is a girly girl. Except she's beginning to think that her ruffle pants I sew her are not so cool anymore.
...wants to go to Disney World so bad she can't see straight. Not a day goes by she doesn't ask me something about it. "Mommy, which princesses did you see when you went?", "Mommy, does Snow White live in the castle too?", "Will Cinderella know my name?"
...loves to add and count everything. (another OCD trait).
...reads lots of books.
...still has her two imaginary friends, Abby and Estica.
...wants to be a mommy and a teacher when she grows up. "Like my mommy," she'd tell you.
...asks me who she will marry. She's beginning to realize she can't marry Daddy.
...wants to name her little girl either Abby or Gabbie.
...loves to sing.
...goes to "big church" on Sunday mornings with Mom and Dad.
...hats any kind of bug.
...will be playing tball this summer, but still wants to take ballet this fall.
...is a I Love Lucy fan already. Her favorite episode is the Hollywood season where Lucy dances with Van Johnson.
...is a drama queen and receives several minuscule injuries a day which require band aids or ice packs.
...loves to snuggle.
...is a great helper, often when not even asked.
...can negotiate like no four year old I've ever seen. I keep saying I'm going to send her to the middle east. She'll have them all straightened out in about an hour.
...often tells Brielle she's amazing, and tells me God gave her the exact sister she's always wanted.
...asks five hundred questions in the car on the way to school.
...remembers EVERYTHING. She'll bring up conversations I had with others from months ago.
...watches The Lawrence Welk show on Saturday nights with Daddy. They have a tea party and Daddy attempts some of the dance moves.
...wishes she was a teenager.
I tell her everyday that she's my favorite four year old in the whole world. I just love this sweet girl so much and can't believe how quickly she's growing up. It makes me happy and sad at the same time.

First Day of Preschool
Kendall started her first day of K3 yesterday! (pure excitement from Kendall, a little excitement/reluctance from Mommy)
Since Mommy works in the MMO at church/school, and since Kendall attended the MMO for three years, going over to the "kindergarten hall" is a transition Kendall was more than ready for. She's always been the big fish in the little pond. She's still a big fish though the pond just got slightly bigger this year.
And how did she do on her first day??
Well, this was her prayer at lunch after we got home:
Dear God, thank you for all you have given us. Thank you that I could go to kindergarten today. And thank you that I did just fine. Amen

Cinderella
Currently topping my list of things
I can't do while pregnant would be...
... paint my toenails
... take a deep breath
... sit in a chair without a pillow for back support
... or watch sappy commercials or movies without crying
The most recent addition to the list should be...listening to Stephen Curtis Chapman's song "Cinderella".
It came on in the car when I was by myself the other day. (Yes, I actually was by myself in the car, a rarity--and luxury--- I know.) I knew better than to listen but for some reason I just didn't turn the dial. By the time the song was over I had reached my destination and was just sitting in the car sobbing while trying to compose myself and save my mascara along with my dignity.
The reason why the song struck such a chord with me was just the night before Gabe and Kendall had done their Saturday night ritual: have a real tea party with Mommy's real tea cups and watch, of all things, Lawrence Welk. Yes, my three year old is captivated by old reruns of Lawrence Welk. She loves the dancing, singing and costumes. I mean, I have memories of my grandparents watching it on Saturday nights when I would spend the weekend with them. But how many preschoolers now actually know who Lawrence Welk is??? Well, mine does. (But she also knows who Lucille Ball is and can let me know which I Love Lucy episode she's in the mood to watch.) So I'm assuming she's not the typical three year old??
Anyway...for the past few weeks Kendall has wanted to wear her Cinderella dress and dance with Daddy. She practicing her Ginger Rogers moves lately. And Gabe is such a good sport. He does what ever she directs.
This is her spin/break dance combo move. She fancied it up even more by adding a leg kick to it.
And I think Gabe realizes something. For a brief season of her life, he is her prince. And she wants to dance every dance with her Daddy. All too soon she'll be grown and dancing to Lawrence Welk on Saturday nights with her Daddy won't be exactly how she'll dream of spending her Saturday nights. All too soon her affections will be swept away by another prince charming, whom I already consistently pray for. So for now we'll both cherish the moments of her being so little and thinking we're so great (and that Daddy can actually dance).
And if you happen to not know the song "Cinderella" I highly recommend you take a minute and listen to it.

I do recommend kleenex if you have a daughter of your own. And if you're pregnant, the box.

Oh, Happy Day! Chick-fil-a!
My awesome friend, Amanda, finally got to take Kendall to her promised Chick-fil-a reward for having an entire accident-free potty week. (That's why she's awesome: she SO helped in helping Kendall get over the final uumph of potty training by bribing rewarding her with a special incentive.) I really thought I was going to be qualified to write the forward to a book a friend is working on, How To Potty Train Your Child In 365 Days Or More. Folks, I was three months shy of certifications, and three minutes shy of losing my mind. Seriously, without giving TMI on Kendall's personal affairs (When you're the mama of a potty training toddler AND you were teaching twelve two-year-olds simultaneously, words like poop, pee and potty became casual words of daily discussions.), she had #1 down fine for a while. It was just the other....
But I digress. Today was FINALLY the day after weeks of coaxing and phone calls and high fives and disappointments and encouragement from Amanda. We headed off in the midst of the foreboding monsoon along with Amanda's girl, Kaylee.
And take it to the bank, friends, aint no body waited as long for this day as Mama! No body. I feel like a new woman (I hope...).

Two and Three Fourths
Kendall is two and three fourths. I thought I would record some things about her at this age.
Kendall loves her friend, Caleb. In fact, her voice gets an octave higher when she talks about him. Is she too young still for her first crush?? I don't blame her. Caleb is a sweetie. And, no, I'm not just biased since he's my BFF's boy. He's really that sweet. She has other friends at school that take really high ranks as well.
Kendall loves to clean like her mama. The OCD gene is as strong as ever. She enjoys washing dishes in the sink while I'm cooking. Really, she likes to be where I am doing what I'm doing.
Kendall has this thing for falling asleep in the car. It happens all the time: long trips or just trips home from the grocery. Doesn't matter.
Kendall is definitely a girly girl. I guess that influence comes from her Gigi, though I do like bows and pretty stuff myself as well. She loves to be decked out in her jewelery.
Tea parties are still as popular as ever/ They continue to get more elaborate.
And here's the cleaning gene at work again.
Yep, she's a Lucy fan! We made another trip back to Babalu with my sister, another fellow fan. Kendall sat there and ate guacamole and chips while watching I Love Lucy episodes projected on the wall as shown here. It kept her full attention for an hour.
Here is one of Kendall's school BFFs, Seth. But they don't want you to think they like each other, though they both talk about each other when at home. Seth told his mama that Kendall is his friend, and I quote, "I love her."
Cinderella is the movie of choice lately. She tells me, "That cat mean. He doesn't do what Bible says." And, "Cinderella's sisters are mean. They not nice to Cinderella. Cinderella loves the prince."
Kendall can identify all her upper case letters, and is now self teaching herself the lower case. I'm not pressing the issue, so I guess it's coming from one of her PBS Kids shows.
Whatever the phobia of clowns is called, Kendall's got it. She is deathly afraid of them. She won't go to McDonald's because of Ronald McDonald. And when we took her to backyard circus, she kept a death grip on us and eyes pealed for clowns at all times. I guess it's a byproduct of her fear of any statues or annoying animated singing Christmas Santas and the like over three feet tall. But she's not scared of the dark. Go figure.
Food. Food. Food. We've been blessed that she continues to be a good eater. She's always eaten well. The list toppers include burritos rice and beans, tomatoes, any fruit, any and all beans, chicken nuggets and spaghetti.
She sure is fun to have around. She definitely keeps us laughing. It's amazing some of the stuff they can come up with.

Dr. Kendall!!
She finally did it. She worked hard. Had a few set backs. Brought herself and her mama to tears a few times. But she has overcome. Yes, Kendall has earned all ten of her magnets to get her coveted doctor kit. It's been slow going, but slow and steady we're winning the race. Kendall proudly placed her tenth and final magnet on her potty incentive chart yesterday. And she earned it as SCHOOL, so Mama was extra proud!
Kendall called Daddy and
And just Daddy's luck, Target only had the granddaddy doctor kits of them all. Nope. None of the cheaper Fisher Price ones that come in the flimsy little black bag. THIS one has it all: everything from a stethoscope that makes a real heartbeat noise to a play beeper so Dr. Kendall can be on call at all times. But what's a Daddy gonna do?
Kendall was so proud when we left the store. We had to open it and all its eleventy billion parts as soon as we got in the car. And she played with it the whole way home.
And even more once we got home. Never mind it was past bath time. Bath time didn't happen.
Everyone, including Kendall herself, received a check up.
Daddy even had some nose spray, per doctor's orders.
Kendall learned how to check "bud peshure".
And she tried out her new skills on Mommy.
Yes, bloggies, Kendall has her medical license. Let's just hope her credentials aren't revoked. That's still a real possibility around here. Very volatile.

365 Days or More
A friend of mine, Rebekah, is writing a book entitled "How to Potty Train Your Child In 365 Days or More". I've offered to write the forward to it since it's possible I'll be qualified though I'm trying my hardest to lose those credentials. We've made a lot of success but it seems we've hit a speed bump on the road to clean panties. I've heard that regression can be normal?? So I'm pulling out all the stops.
There is one thing Kendall wants more than life itself: a doctor kit. She begs for it at school and church every time.
Ding! Light bulb bubble above Mommy's head.
Insert incentive chart. She can count to ten easily now. Include a picture of a doctor kit and some Disney princess magnets and what could be better? How could this go wrong? I'll have the nipped in the bud in a matter of days.
Knocking on my computer table which is maybe solid wood???
And here's what the chart looks like today. Not bad. She made it to 5 quickly, but we've been stuck there for a little since she can earn and lose magnets. But I think it's working. That along with the two daily "check points" I have instilled. Make it to check point #1 at lunch and get a treat or surprise. Make it to check point #2 at bath time and get another.
Today's check point #1 was a trip to the park. Unlike yesterday when we left Kroger (check point #1) with no deli lunch as conditionally promised -boo!- we made it to the park today -YEA!.
And it was cut short a little at the tail end due to undisclosed reasons to protect theinnocent minor involved. But we seem to be making ground each day.
This WILL be over soon. And Dr. Kendall will soon be giving everyone in the house check ups. And Mommy will get a monthly raise as panties are much cheaper than pull ups.
Now, tell me WHY I decided to pull out all the stops and put her in panties come what may NOW when my washing machine is broken and we're still in the midst of replacing it?? Yeah, either bad timing or desperation. And I reserve the right not to comment further on that.

First Haircut
At the age of two years, two months and six days, it was fiiiiiii-nally time for Kendall to get a haircut! Her hair has been so fine and slow going that there just wasn't much to cut up to this point. And though the wispy little sides are still struggling, the scraggliness got the best of me. So I called my awesome hairdresser, Jonathan, and made an appointment. And of course this Girl-Scout-coulda-been Mama was prepared with the camera and a plastic ziploc to collect the first snip as a keepsake forever and ever amen.
Kendall did not move.a.muscle the entire time. I'm not sure if she was curious, excited, scared to death or a combination of all the above. It also could have been just the sight of it all. We had prepared her the night before, telling her that she would sit in a very special chair (which I'm sure was translated into a pink, sparkly diamond-studded princess chair to Kendall, so that was shock #1) and Mr. Jonathan (who is a big, lovable teddy bear who loves to kid and joke and call everyone "Baby" and "Sugar", shock #2) would cut (??) her hair. No telling how her mind processed it all. But Jonathan did a great job trying to warm her up. And, really, it didn't take five minutes.
Even a little teasing from Jonathan didn't break the ice. Good thing he had a t.v. just out of sight of the camera and double good thing Elmo was on. That would make him awesome in Kendall's book!
And finally, sucker in hand, Kendall is ready to show off her new do.
Sorta. Elmo was way more interesting than Mommy'sannoying thorough photo session of capturing yet another "first" for the record books.
And as expected Jonathan did an awesome job. He didn't cut much, but it sure does look much better. No more "baby hair".

Happy 2nd Birthday, Kendall
All too soon you'll fill these shoes, just as you've filled my heart.
For a moment you are watching, imitating, learning as you grow and experience life. Therefore, may my words be patient, actions be kind, and reactions be loving. May my love as your mother point you to Jesus.
All too soon you'll be grown. So please allow Mama to hug, kiss and cuddle you a little too much, and take way too many pictures in hopes of capturing a moment drifting by. One day, sooner than you think now, you'll understand.
Happy birthday, my precious Kendall.
